Temperature-dependent polarization vs electric field loops of MLCC.

In our recent publication entitled “NaNbO3-based antiferroelectric multilayer ceramic capacitors for energy storage applications” (Journal of the European Ceramic Society, 41 (11), S. 5519-5525), multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC) were fabricated from NaNbO3-based antiferroelectric powder.

In addition to the NaNbO3- SrSnO3, a relaxor ferroelectric (Na0.5Bi0.5)TiO3 was added in order to increase the energy efficiency. The five layer MLCC of 0.90NaNbO3-0.06SrSnO3-0.04(Na0.5Bi0.5)TiO3 composition featured a characteristic double hysteresis loop at 25 °C. Moreover, in the temperature range of 25 to 150 °C and at the electric field of 24 kV/mm, the recoverable energy storage is ranging from 1.16 to 1.42 J/cm3, respectively. In the same temperature range, energy efficiency is constant, at the value of 0.4. Finally, the MLCCs exhibit resistance to electric field cycling and could withstand up to 1000 cycles, without breakdown or large degradation of properties. These results verify that NaNbO3-based antiferroelectrics in the form of MLCCs are promising for use in applications.
