LOEWE-FLAME's Third Annual Retreat

2021/12/09 by

For the third annual meeting since the start of the funding in 2019, the members of the LOEWE project FLAME met in Weinheim (Bergstraße) from November 11-12, 2021.

Due to the ongoing corona pandemic, the retreat was held in hybrid mode, so that members who were unable to attend the in-presence event had the opportunity to actively participate virtually. For those who attended in person, the conference took place at the NH Hotel in Weinheim (Bergstraße) in strict compliance with the corona regulations and TU Darmstadt's Hygiene and Infection Control concept. After almost two years of “social distancing”, it was a particularly pleasant experience for the participants to exchange ideas intensively and across departmental disciplines: An important opportunity for the scientific staff of the individual projects to present and discuss their previous research results on the topic of antiferroelectric materials and to expand their networks.

Within the LOEWE Project FLAME (Fermi Level Engineering of Antiferroelectric Materials for Energy Storage and Insulators), previously unexploited correlations between the electronic structure of a material and its properties are used to produce materials that are free of toxic lead. Such antiferroelectric materials can be used, for example, in capacitors but they can also be used as insulators in high-voltage power lines or for new cooling systems.
